While design shows and social media stars have provided a blueprint for DIYers everywhere, lighting is kind of the last frontier. Maybe you painted an accent wall or upcycled a piece of furniture, but have you replaced the tragic boob light in your entryway? Probably not. Mitzi is here to prove that installing a new light fixture is easier than you think!
Â
What You’ll Need:
- Your New Mitzi Light Fixture
- Assembly Instructions
- Voltage Detector
- Screwdriver
- Wire connectors
- Ladder
Mitzi Stylist Tip: Everything’s better with a friend! Ask a friend, family member, or neighbor to assist with the installation of larger fixtures like a chandelier or linear.Â

Let’s Get to It!
- Turn off the power
Safety first! Turn off the power to your existing fixture at the electrical panel or breaker. You can check that there is no power running to the fixture by flipping the switch on and off.Â
- Remove the old fixture
This is getting real! Hop up on that ladder and using your screwdriver, loosen the hardware holding your fixture in place to expose three colored wires: hot (black), neutral (white), and ground (copper). Use the voltage detector to triple-check that there is no electrical current running to the fixture. Finally, disconnect the wires and say goodbye. You’re on your way to beautiful lighting! Â
Mitzi Stylist Tip: Give your old fixture a new life by donating to your local Salvation Army or Habitat for Humanity
- Attach the bracket and Wire the Fixture
There’s no turning back! Now that you have a clean slate, using that handy dandy screwdriver, attach the bracket (included with your fixture) to the electrical box.Â
- Remember those colored wires? Wiring your new fixture is as simple as the matching game. Connect the black wires from your Mitzi fixture to the black wires in the electrical box, finish with a wire connector, and repeat, connecting white to white. Locate the green screw on your mounting bracket from step 3 and wrap the copper wire around that screw.Â
- Assemble Your Mitzi Fixture
You’re almost there! Secure the body of the fixture to the surface using the provided decorative hardware and reference the assembly instructions to add the finishing touch to your Mitzi light fixture. Whether adding a shade to a wall sconce or glass globes to a chandelier, the assembly instructions provide a step-by-step guide on how to make your unique fixture picture perfect!
Mitzi Stylist Tip: Don’t forget the lightbulbs!
