A Tastemaker’s Journey to Isola

A Tastemaker’s Journey to Isola

An inside look at Anthony D’Argenzio’s latest hospitality project—and how lighting plays a starring role.

Anthony D’Argenzio, founder of Zio & Sons, tastemaker, and the creative force behind our dreamy Zio & Sons x Mitzi collection, is back with his latest design gem: Isola Wine and Tapas. Tucked away in Kinderhook, NY, this cozy, coastal-inspired wine bar is part old-world European tavern, part upstate chic. We caught up with Anthony to talk about how Isola came to life and how his Tastemakers lighting collection helps set the mood.

What inspired you to open Isola, and how does it reflect your personal design style?

I’ve always been drawn to history, and 16 Hudson St in Kinderhook, dating back to 1787, is rich with it. Whenever I take on a new project, I let the setting and structure shape the design—this time, inspired by the character of historic Kinderhook. Working with my former partner, I wanted to bring her vision to life: an homage to the old-world European coast. The goal was to create the feeling of stepping into a centuries-old tavern in a distant place, while of course keeping modern comforts in mind.

Can you share the story behind the name “Isola”?

Isola means ‘island’ in Italian, and every wine on the menu comes from the islands and coastal towns of Europe. The tapas draw inspiration from those same regions, with local ingredients woven in whenever possible. My goal was to create a space that evokes the essence of Old World Europe—somewhere that feels like Sardinia, Catalonia, or the South of France.

What role does Hudson play in the vision for Isola?

Hudson is just a quick 20-minute drive from Kinderhook, and both towns share a deep history and a strong design sensibility. My goal was to help create a destination that feels connected yet distinct—a place that offers an escape from the bustling restaurant and bar scene of Warren Street while still being within easy reach.

What can guests expect when they step into Isola? Any signature details?

Cozy and comfortable, the space is designed to feel like you're in an Old World tavern. I sourced antiques from the South of France as well as here in upstate New York to bring authenticity and warmth. The tile is from my Zio and Sons collection with Clé Tile, the bistro furniture comes from my collaboration with Industry West, and all the paint is by Farrow & Ball.

Is there a particular dish or wine that captures the essence of the space?

The tuna tartare represents the refreshing, seaside eateries of Europe. Hillary would pair that with a Spanish rosé, or a Grillo from Sicily. Speaking of Sicily, the Island Panisse is a traditional chickpea pie with cauliflower purée and gremolata, which goes perfectly with her Sumoll, a light red wine from Penedès.

Lighting is such a crucial element in hospitality—how did you use your collection to set the mood at Isola?

We incorporated fixtures from our Zio and Sons x Mitzi collection, with the Beverly as the perfect shape to achieve a classic, refined aesthetic. The use of brass adds warmth and character, designed to age beautifully and withstand the test of time. Inspired by American heritage design at the turn of the 20th century, Beverly is a timeless piece.

What was your lighting philosophy when designing Isola?

Simple and moody, the space is intentionally dimly lit to highlight the quality of the materials. Glass and brass create a warm, inviting atmosphere that feels effortlessly timeless and perfectly suits the character of the building.

How does Isola reflect your evolution as a designer and tastemaker?

I’m always challenging myself as a designer, and creating a commercial/hospitality space really pushed me to think more strategically about both form and function. At the same time, I was able to bring in my love for vintage pieces, creating a cozy yet homey environment. This project sparked a new interest in expanding into commercial and hospitality design—anyone need a hotel designed?
